Rebecca Samakow is a lawyer by day and happy home chef by night. Her passion for cooking started by assisting her father and grandmother in the kitchen, where she learned all different types of recipes and the fundamentals of creating home cooked meals.

When the pandemic started last year, Rebecca created a virtual cooking class for her colleagues at work to help keep their team together even though they were apart. What started as a way for colleagues to virtually hang out, learn basic cooking skills and how to make simple meals, turned into a full-fledged, weekly cooking series.

During the live weekly series, Rebecca teaches viewers and participants the history and facts of food, basic cooking skills, with easy to follow recipes, that everyone cooks together. Each week focuses on bringing new and exciting flavor profiles together and encouraging the common theme that food is for everyone and everyone can cook!

Creating this series and having the opportunity to see people who have never cooked before gain a new skill set and passion became one of the most rewarding experiences for Rebecca in 2020, and she is looking forward to continuing on this culinary journey.

On this episode, Rebecca shares her one way ticket to 1950s France when Julia Child was in cooking school. During the conversation, Rebecca also offers some terrific kitchen tips and hacks for both the experienced and newbie chef. If there’s one book you need to pick up now, it’s “The Child in the Electric Chair”. It tells the true story of George Junius Stinney, Jr., a 14 year old black boy who was convicted – and sent to the electric chair – for the murder of two young white girls in a 1944 South Carolina town. The story exposes the preposterous legal system in the Jim Crow south, race relations then, and leads the reader to question the real meaning of equal justice under the law.

The book, which took nearly a dozen years to research and write, was the undertaking of the very thoughtful Historian, Eli Faber. When he realized he wouldn’t be able to complete it due to advanced pancreatic cancer, he asked his dear friend and colleague, fellow Historian Carol Berkin, to complete the book and see it through publication. And that she did. Sadly, Eli Faber passed away before seeing the work go to print.

On this episode, Carol Berkin, Presidential Professor of History, Emerita, of Baruch College & The Graduate Center, CUNY, discusses the book and all of its complexities. As our guest on episode 124, we start the conversation by having her revisit her one way ticket destination to the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention.

Curtis Sliwa is New York City’s 2021 Republican Mayoral Candidate. The general election will be held on Tuesday November 2, 2021.

Born in 1954 in Canarsie, Brooklyn, to a Catholic family of Polish and Italian descent, Curtis opened the first recycling center in Brooklyn when he was 14. Known as the teenage “neighborhood junk collector,” he collected empty cans, glass bottles, newspapers, and scrap metal, storing them in his basement after preparing them for recycling.

At 15, while delivering newspapers, Curtis saved a family from their burning home. He made three trips into the burning building and saved six people’s lives. For his heroism, he was named Newspaper Boy of the Year by the Daily News and was honored at the White House for his act by President Nixon.

In the late 70’s, while working as a night manager at a McDonalds in the Bronx, Curtis formed a group called the “Rock Brigade.” The goal was to clean up a neglected New York City.

To make up for a scarcity of police patrols, Curtis retooled the focus of the volunteer effort to fill the void in crime fighting and the group took to the subway. The 13-member, multi-racial team of volunteers became known as “The Magnificent Thirteen.” The group agreed to ride the subways between the toughest stops, without weapons, to help put a stop to the crimes occurring to citizens riding the subway system. These courageous volunteers would look for gang members who had been mugging straphangers in the subway and detain them for the police to arrest. Many times, simply their presence would act as a deterrent to illegal activity.

As word spread of "The Magnificent Thirteen" and their heroic deeds, more rushed to join the efforts. On February 13, 1979, Curtis created “The Guardian Angels.” Volunteers of all ages go through weeks-long rigorous training, in which they learn martial arts techniques in order to defend themselves, enforce discipline, and make legal citizens’ arrests, all without the use of weapons. Men and women in "The Guardian Angels" are recognizable in their bright red berets and military-like bomber jackets. These unarmed volunteers patrol the streets and subways, often in groups, keeping a watchful eye over the city.

Curtis began his media career in 1990, where he started as a radio broadcaster at WABC-AM. He hosted various radio programs on WABC, and in 2000, became the co-host of the long-running Curtis and Kuby in the morning.

In 1992, Curtis received the prestigious Courage of Conscience Award from the Peace Abbey at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston for his work of establishing the Guardian Angels in major cities on every continent in the world.

On this episode, Curtis shares his one way ticket to the “Theatre of the Mind”. He also shares his mayoral platform and life with his wife Nancy and their 16 rescue cats  in a 328 sq. ft. Upper West Side apartment.

A master mimic of more than 200 voices, including U.S. Presidents: John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, both George Bushes, Barack Obama, Donald Trump and Joe Biden -- Rich Little has a voice for every administration.

Infamous for his skewering of political figures, Little has charmed, amused, intrigued and entertained politicians from here to his native Canada.

He entertained at both of Reagan's presidential inaugurations and got to know the Reagans very well during that time. President Reagan used to tell Little, "You do me better than I do."

Apart from his impressions, Little is also an artist. He started sketching when he was young, drawing his family and friends. To date, he has drawn around 100 pictures of all the celebrities and politicians he imitates, and portrays several of these life-like charcoal sketches in his shows.

His recently released book, "Little by Little: People I've Known and Been" is now available.

These days, Little can be seen performing at the Laugh Factory at the Tropicana in Las Vegas.

From August 6th through September 4th, 2021, Little will be starring in his New York Theatrical Debut in George Bugatti's play "Trial on the Potomac - The Impeachment of Richard Nixon", based on the book "The Real Watergate Scandal," by Geoff Shepard at the Theatre at St. Clements.

On this episode, Little shares the one way ticket destinations of Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Johnny Carson and Carol Channing. He also offers impressions and anecdotes about the many noted personalities he’s known throughout the decades. José Koechlin von Stein established Inkaterra in 1975, pioneering ecotourism and sustainable development in Peru. Aiming to underscore natural and cultural values, Inkaterra works under a holistic approach. Scientific research is produced as a basis for conservation, education and the wellbeing of local communities.

Major flora and fauna inventories have been sponsored by Mr. Koechlin since 1978, defining natural areas where Inkaterra hotels are located – the Amazon rainforest in Madre de Dios, the Machu Picchu cloud forest, the Sacred Valley of the Incas, the city of Cusco and the Cabo Blanco coastline. Achievements in research and conservation in hotel grounds include the study of 814 bird species registered at Inkaterra areas of influence, equivalent to 93% of Costa Rica’s total bird diversity; the description of 362 ant species (world record sponsored by Harvard biologist E.O. Wilson); the Andean Bear Conservation Center at Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel, in benefit of the only bear species native to South America; and the world’s largest native orchid collection according to the American Orchid Society, with 372 species (including 20 new to science).

To promote travel experiences in Peru, Mr. Koechlin co-produced Werner Herzog’s classic films Aguirre, The Wrath of God (1972) and Fitzcarraldo (Best Director, Cannes Film Festival 1982), and Les Blank’s documentary Burden of Dreams (1982). He has promoted various publications on Peru’s biodiversity and culture, such as Cusco Amazónico: The Lives of Amphibians and Reptiles in an Amazonian Rainforest (Cornell University Press, 2005), described by Cornell University as “the baseline against which all future studies of Amazonian amphibians and reptiles will be compared to”; Flórula de la Reserva Ecológica Inkaterra (Missouri Botanical Garden and Inka Terra Asociación, 2007); Orchids at Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel (Inkaterra, 2007); Kim MacQuarrie’s The Last Days of the Incas (Inkaterra, 2012); and Lord of Miracles (Inkaterra, 2014).

Acknowledged by AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) in its ‘100 World Influential Leaders’ academic list, Mr. Koechlin is also Chairman of Sociedad Hoteles del Perú; Vice Chairman of CANATUR (National Chamber of Tourism) and E-Meritus Board Member of Conservation International (Washington D.C.).
